Subscription discounts can repeat forever
If a referee discount applies to every subscription renewal, one referral can cost you far more than you planned. You need to decide how many cycles the discount lasts.
Supplements & wellness playbook
Supplement and wellness customers often buy on a schedule and talk about routines with people they trust. A referral program can turn that into new subscribers, as long as you control what a reward costs over time. Here is the setup on Shopify with BLOOP.
The challenge
If a referee discount applies to every subscription renewal, one referral can cost you far more than you planned. You need to decide how many cycles the discount lasts.
People recommend wellness products to those who ask. A referral invite that reads like an ad can backfire, so the share message and the reward should feel low-pressure.
A referral program that pays on each new customer attracts people who make their own accounts to collect the reward. You need checks and a review window before rewards are approved.
Reward recipe
Example: A first order is $60 and your gross profit on it is $27. The new customer gets 15% off ($60 x 0.15 = $9), and the referrer earns $10 in store credit. The rewards total $9 + $10 = $19, which leaves $27 - $19 = $8 before other costs. If the discount also applied to renewals with the recurring cycle limit at 0 (unlimited), each renewal would be discounted too, so set a cycle count that fits your margin.
Plays to run
The discount reward has a recurring cycle limit from 0 (unlimited) to 99. BLOOP's docs say unlimited is rarely what you want on a referral reward and suggest 1 to 3 cycles. For a replenishment brand, decide deliberately how many renewals the offer covers.
Uses: Referrer and referee rewards →BLOOP's guidance for subscription categories is store credit or a free cycle for the referrer and a discount on the first cycle for the referee. Store credit keeps the referrer subscribed for the next order.
Uses: Referrer and referee rewards →When a referral triggers fraud signals, BLOOP holds the reward for 14 days and tags the order BLOOP suspicious referral. You can approve or reject it, exclude genuine customers from checks, or ban a referrer.
Uses: Fraud Center →Set the audience to a Shopify customer segment, such as customers with at least one completed order. BLOOP suggests this default for most stores because people who have used the product are more credible advocates.
Uses: Referrer and referee rewards →FlexiTiers raise the reward at higher referral counts. Keep the structure simple enough to describe in one sentence; BLOOP notes that three well-spaced tiers beat five granular ones.
Uses: FlexiTiers →Wellness coaches and creators often prefer a commission over a one-time reward. BLOOP's affiliate program has a branded portal, a registration form where you review and approve or reject applicants, and a default campaign of 15% commission with a 30-day cookie.
