Thin margins leave little room for rewards
BLOOP's reward guidance describes food and beverage as low margin and high frequency. A large flat reward can wipe out the profit on a first order, so the reward must be small and calculated.
Food and drink brands sell often and earn thin margins per order. A referral program works here when the rewards are small, the maths is checked, and the program asks for a share at the right moment. Here is how to build it on Shopify with BLOOP.
The challenge
BLOOP's reward guidance describes food and beverage as low margin and high frequency. A large flat reward can wipe out the profit on a first order, so the reward must be small and calculated.
Value comes from repeat purchases, not the first box. The reward should aim to bring a friend in, not to pay for the whole first order.
Pre-orders, made-to-order items and fresh goods can ship days after checkout. A reward granted at payment can go out before the order has even left your kitchen.
Reward recipe
Example: A first order is $40 and your gross profit on it is $14. The new customer gets 10% off ($40 x 0.10 = $4), and the referrer earns $3 in store credit. The rewards total $4 + $3 = $7, which leaves $14 - $7 = $7 before other costs. A $10 referrer reward here would bring the total to $14 and leave nothing.
Plays to run
BLOOP's guidance for food and beverage is a modest store credit. Credit is redeemed on a future order, so the cost to you is your margin on that order rather than its full face value.
Uses: Referrer and referee rewards →The same guidance suggests a small percentage off or a free add-on for the referee. A free product reward uses your unit cost, which suits a sample or an extra item.
Uses: Referrer and referee rewards →Switch the trigger from Paid to Fulfilled so rewards are only granted once the order ships. That suits pre-orders and made-to-order products.
Uses: Referrer and referee rewards →Add a minimum purchase amount or item count to the reward so a very small first order does not trigger a payout. You can also require a number of referrals, such as every 5th referral.
Uses: Referrer and referee rewards →The post-purchase block on the order status page asks while the customer is happy with the purchase. BLOOP also sends referrer emails such as welcome, referral progress and a recurring reminder to refer, which you can edit.
Uses: Emails, Klaviyo and Mailchimp →Both integrations sync who your advocates are and what they have earned, plus a permanent link to the referral hub, so you can send referral emails from the tool you already use.
